NFL: The Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers are both in the midst of new eras. The Steelers are excited about what they have in Kenny Pickett. They are hoping he can be the next franchise quarterback in Pittsburgh. The Packers are looking to show the league that Jordan Love can be the next franchise quarterback for their team. It would make for the third franchise quarterback in a row for the organization. All of that being said, the two teams have been named in a massive trade together that would benefit both sides.
The Green Bay Packers Land Cornerback Depth Via Massive Trade With The Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL)
When the Packers placed a $4.3 million second-round tender on their incumbent starting right tackle Yosh Nijman this offseason, it seemed like the right call. Either they were going to retain a starting offensive lineman on a well below market number in the middle of a cap crunch or they were going to receive a premium draft pick back for the loss of Nijman.
No team was willing to part ways with a second-round pick for Nijman, which shouldn’t be a surprise — as no player who has ever been given a second-round tender in the NFL has ever been poached by another squad. Entering practices this year, it seemed like Nijman was going to battle with Zach Tom for the right to be the team’s starting bookend.
What no one could imagine, at the time, was that Tom would run away with the right tackle job while second-year player Rasheed Walker displaced Nijman as the team’s swing tackle — leaving Nijman fourth on the tackle depth chart. That’s been the case recently, as Walker has received opportunities ahead of Nijman in the past two weeks of practice and in last week’s preseason game against the New England Patriots.
Now the Packers are being named in a trade that would land them legitimate secondary depth.
The Packers Land Starting Cornerback Levi Wallace In Trade With Steelers
Wallace joined the Steelers last season after four years with the Buffalo Bills, and he played significantly well. He finished the year with 48 tackles, 13 passes defended and four interceptions, the second-most on the team behind Minkah Fitzpatrick. For a team relatively thin at cornerback, Wallace was a very capable starter.
This season, though, the Steelers have much better corner depth to depend on. They signed veteran Patrick Peterson in free agency, then drafted Joey Porter Jr. in the second round. With the added depth, Wallace suddenly finds himself as likely the third corner in Pittsburgh.
Knowing that, it’s not out of the question that Wallace could be a trade candidate for the Steelers. That is where the Packers come in. Our trade proposal between the Packers and Steelers would look like this:
Green Bay Packers Receive:
- CB Levi Wallace
Pittsburgh Steelers Receive:
- T Yosh Nijman
