NBA rumors: Even ESPN is cutting costs this summer. Unfortunately for no less than 20 on-air personalities, they took the short end of the stick after the sports broadcasting giants decided to embark on a massive purge. As they always say, however, there’s always a rainbow after a storm, and it seems that this particular rainbow is shining brightly on former Milwaukee Bucks sharpshooter JJ Redick.
NBA Rumors: JJ Redick Named As Candidate For ESPN’s Top NBA Broadcast Team
According to Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports, Redick has “zoomed to the top of the contenders’ list to join ESPN’s top NBA game broadcast team.” He will potentially take the spot of former NBA coach turned broadcaster Jeff Van Gundy, who himself was part of the recent layoffs.
McCarthy also reports that Doris Burke, former head coach Doc Rivers, as well as Richard Jefferson — another Bucks alum — are also in play for Van Gundy’s recently-vacated post.
Redick has made quite a name for himself in the broadcasting world. His podcast, The Old Man & The Three, gained immense popularity, which led to ESPN taking JJ in as one of their broadcasters during the previously concluded NBA season. The top brass clearly liked what they saw in the 39-year-old, and he’s now on the brink of a major promotion.
NBA Rumors: JJ Redick Had Brief History With Bucks
JJ Redick is probably most known for his stint with the Orlando Magic. After all, he did play seven seasons for the same team that drafted him No. 11 overall in the 2006 NBA Draft. However, he also suited up for no less than five other teams during his eventful 15-year career in the NBA. One of those teams were the Milwaukee Bucks.
Redick’s tenure with the Magic ended in 2013 when Orlando decided to trade him to the Bucks. This was just before the trade deadline of that season and Redick, along with Gustavo Ayon and Ish Smith were sent to Milwaukee in exchange for Tobias Harris, Beno Udrih, Doron Lamb, and cash considerations.
Redick played just half a season for the Bucks before getting traded again, this time to the Los Angeles Clippers. In 28 games played for Milwaukee, the former Duke standout averaged 12.3 points, 1.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.7 triples in 28.7 minutes per contest.
