NBA news: While most of the big names have already been plucked off the board in this summer’s edition of NBA free agency, there are still a handful of notable names that are still available on the market. However, while a tad premature, it wouldn’t hurt to look at what next year’s iteration could look like — especially considering how it involves a key player for the Milwaukee Bucks.
NBA News: Jrue Holiday Deemed One of the Top Free Agents Next Summer
Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report conjured up a list of his Top 30 projected free agents in 2024, and among the bunch, there was only one player from the Bucks. It’s not just any player, though, as Jrue Holiday was ranked as No. 4 on Bailey’s list, behind just LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard, and Anthony Davis, respectively.
The good news for the Bucks is that Holiday is still under contract through 2025. The bad news is that he has a player option for next season, which means that if he so chooses, he could walk away as an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Holiday will have 37.4 million reasons not to, though. This is the amount of guaranteed money he could potentially earn if he decides to stay on with the Bucks. If he opts otherwise, however, you can be sure that there will be more than a few interested suitors in free agency.
“The fact that he’ll be 34 next summer will factor into his future prospects, too. But Holiday’s playmaking and high-end perimeter defense, which have made him one of the NBA’s most positively impactful players over the last three seasons, should make him a top-five free agent if he declines his $37.4 million player option for the 2024-25 season,” Bailey wrote.
Milwaukee fans are obviously hoping that this won’t be the case.
NBA News: Jrue Holiday’s Potential Exit Could Cause Major Headache for Bucks
As it is, the Bucks already have some depth issues at the point guard spot, with sophomore AJ Green expected to be Jrue’s primary backup. Green is obviously no Jrue Holiday, and while Milwaukee may bring in a new PG, it would be a tall task to try are replace what Holiday brings to the table.
Could the Bucks offer Jrue Holiday a contract extension in the near future? You would think that this would be the smartest move from Milwaukee, but you also have to consider that they have a lot on their plate as well. Don’t forget that Giannis Antetokounmpo is now eligible for an extension himself, and obviously, this is going to be priority No. 1 for the Bucks.
