Most true blue Milwaukee Brewers fans remember fondly and vividly the magical runs of Christian Yelich and their favorite team during the 2018 baseball season. Over the span of his MVP season, Yelich provided clutch hit after clutch hit, ultimately willing the Brewers to the NL Central division title and a berth in that year’s National League Championship Series.
Although 2018 ended with a seven-game series loss to the eventual World Champions Los Angeles Dodgers, Yelich cemented his place in Brewers lore, earning the NL MVP honor by hitting 36 home runs, driving in 110 runs, and batting a robust .326.
However, most True Blue Brew Crew fans may not know just how eerily similar Yelich’s first-half stats in 2018 are to his splits over the first half of this current 2023 season. With that in mind, one question comes to mind: Does Yelich have enough in the tank to duplicate his otherworldly performance of five years ago over the stretch drive of this season?
Christian Yelich’s First-Half Splits Are EXTREMELY Similar
Most Brewers followers remember only the end results–the 2018 season stats as mentioned above. Yet, Yelich’s start this year very much resembles his first half of 2018. Yelich appeared in 81 games before the 2018 all-star break, and he batted .292, slugged 11 home runs, and knocked in 43 runs.
These numbers are fine and certainly acceptable, but his second half accelerated his superstar status. In just 65 games after the 2018 all-star game, Yelich hit 25 bombs, knocked in 67 runs (an average of over one per game), and hit an incredible .367.
But, a closer look at Yelich’s 2023 output may raise a few eyebrows. Over his first 87 games, Yelich had 93 hits (the same number as 2018), cranked 11 home runs, drove in 46 runs, and posted a .284 average. Stacked side by side with his numbers from five years ago, these statistics are mindboggling close.
Can Yelich Recapture 2018’s Magic for the Milwaukee Brewers?
Past performance is no guarantee of future results. But, Brewers fans can only hope that Christian Yelich’s solid start this season, one in which he has drastically improved from his previous two seasons, is a harbinger of postseason successes in the Milwaukee Brewers’ near future.
