Los Angeles Lakers legend Jerry West recently passed away, leading to a wave of shock and grief in the NBA. Among those who have paid tribute to the man in the logo himself is no other than Milwaukee Bucks veteran guard Patrick Beverley.
On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Clippers announced the peaceful passing of West, marking a quiet but befitting farewell to one of the NBA’s most influential figures.
Entering the league in 1960 as a 22-year-old guard from West Virginia, West quickly made an impact. In his rookie season, he posted averages of 17.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. Notably, he earned an All-Star selection and finished 12th in MVP voting, a remarkable achievement for a young player.

Throughout his remarkable 14-year career, he was a perennial All-Star, named to the All-NBA Team 12 times, and played a pivotal role in the Purple and Gold’s NBA Finals victory in 1972, earning the Finals MVP title. West’s personal accolades include five All-Defensive team selections, the scoring championship in the 1969-70 season, and his iconic silhouette becoming the official logo of the NBA.
Yet, West’s competitive drive extended beyond his playing days. He transitioned to coaching, serving as a GM and team executive. Notably, the Logo played a pivotal role in bringing the late Kobe Bryant to the Los Angeles Lakers and was one of the key architects behind the Golden State Warriors’ dynastic success in the 2010s.
