Unlike the United States, Greece doesn’t have enough firepower to match up against major contenders in the upcoming 2024 Olympics’ basketball tournament. Even if that’s the case, the addition of Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo may turn the tide for the Greek national team.

For close to a decade now, the Greek Freak has been the most important player in Milwaukee’s lineup. What started out as a raw prospect has now transformed into an elite forward who can dominate opponents through sheer will and physicality.

This season alone, Antetokounmpo showed everyone how much of a force he can be on both ends of the court. Over the course of 73 games, the Bucks’ All-Star power forward averaged 30,4 points, 11.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.1 blocks. Along with point guard Damian Lillard, he managed to lift Milwaukee to a third-seed finish in the Eastern Conference, despite a sudden change in coaching and injuries affecting the team.

However, his injured calf took Antetokounmpo out of action against Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers. His absence contributed to the Bucks getting eliminated in the first round instead of going far in the playoffs. Even if that’s the case, Antetokounmpo remains one of the NBA’s best players when healthy.

Hellenic Basketball Federation Says Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo Wants To Play in 2024 Olympics For Greece

The Bucks star’s availability for Greece in the 2024 Olympics hasn’t been determined until now. In an article posted by Fiba, the Hellenic Basketball Federation confirmed Antetokounmpo wants to play in the upcoming event.

“Giannis Antetokounmpo wants to play for the national team this summer and help it return to the Olympics for the first time since 2008. That good news has been revealed by the president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK), Evangelos Liolios,” FIBA stated.

Antetokounmpo and company will be under the guidance of Vasilis Spanoulis as their head coach. He is known as one of Greece’s best players after leading Greece to come out victors in the 2005 EuroBasket tournament.

As of now, there’s no official word when Antetokounmpo will start training with the team. In any case, Greece will be garner everyone’s attention with the Milwaukee star leading their Olympic campaign.
