Both the Milwaukee Bucks and Golden State Warriors ended their run this season on a disappointing note. For the latter, though, they’re looking at All-Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo to shake thing up and make their team more competitive next season.
After dominating the league in the last decade or so, the Warriors have found themselves with an aging core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. This regression was evident throughout the regular season, along with the problems of injuries and suspensions.
As a result, Golden State finished the regular season with the 10th seed and a ticket to the Play-In Tournament. Unfortunately, they were eliminated by the Sacramento Kings in the first game, leading many to believe that the Warriors don’t have what it takes to contend anymore.
At the same time, the Bucks also experienced a disappointing run this year, especially after acquiring All-Star guard Damian Lillard to pair up with the Greek Freak. Due to injuries, coaching changes, and not figuring out how to maximize the All-Star duo of Dame and Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee found itself exiting the playoffs earlier than anticipated. Now, both teams have a longer offseason to figure out what they need to address right away.
Golden State Warriors’ Potential Interest In Giannis Antetokounmpo Resurfaces After Milwaukee Bucks’ Elimination
Antetokounmpo has always been the dream acquisition for Golden State these past few years. In an article written by Joey Linn for SI, that interest may have resurfaced after both teams suffered a disappointing run this season:
“Antetokounmpo did not play in any of Milwaukee’s playoff games, as a calf injury held him out for the entirety of the series. There has been no indication from Milwaukee that they are looking to blow their roster up, and there has also been no indication from Antetokounmpo that he’d like to be elsewhere.
That said, perhaps the Warriors will still check in on his availability the same way they checked in with the Los Angeles Lakers about the availability of LeBron James at the trade deadline,” Linn wrote.
Antetokounmpo still has four years left in his current contract after signing a massive $228 million extension last year. If the Warriors plan to acquire him, they’d have to gut their current roster and deplete almost all of their assets to pair the Greek Freak with All-Star point guard Stephen Curry.
In any case, both teams will be busy this offseason to address their weaknesses over the past few months. Fans must keep an eye on their front offices to see if any trade involving Antetokounmpo will go down as it could shake up the entire league in a moment’s notice.
