Despite all that he’s done for the Milwaukee Bucks this season off the bench, Bobby Portis still remains on the outside looking in in the race for this season’s Sixth Man of the Year.
The veteran is considered one of the finalists, so to speak, for the coveted title, but let’s just say that it would be a bit of a shock if he ends up bringing home the trophy.
Milwaukee Bucks News: Bobby Portis Reveals True Feelings on Sixth Man Race
The bookmakers have Sacramento Kings guard Malik Monk as the odds-on frontrunner for the Sixth Man of the Year title. Naz Reid of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Norman Powell of the Los Angeles Clippers round out the Top 3, with Portis needing to settle for the fourth spot.
Portis is having none of it, though. According to the 6-foot-10 big man, all you’d have to do is to compare his numbers to that of his contenders to conclude that he should be in pole position:
“You put my numbers beside the other candidates, I think just the numbers speak for itself,” he said.
In 82 games played this season, Portis has produced averages of 13.8 points on 50.8 percent shooting, 7.4 rebounds, and 1.2 triples per contest. That’s very impressive for a dude playing 24.5 minutes off the bench.
More Than Just the Numbers
Portis knows all too well, however, that it’s more than just the numbers. At the end of the day, a Sixth Man has to bring an unbridled type of energy whenever he steps on the floor — something that Portis believes he excels in tremendously:
“I don’t think my team can really be my team without my energy and my heart that I bring on a daily basis,” he continued. “Forget the scoring, forget the rebounding, but just the heart and soul that I bring to my team. I think the Bucks will look way different without me.”
Bucks’ Bobby Portis on @Stadium: “When I got hints of it, I’m like, ain’t no way I’m getting traded for…excuse my French, that’s my guy, I love competing against him…but I shouldn’t get traded for Grant Williams. That don’t even sound right.”
