The Milwaukee Brewers underwent some major changes this off-season. Pat Murphy was promoted from bench coach to manager, Rickie Weeks was hired and given an important title of associate manager, and they made a splash in free agency by bringing in Rhys Hoskins. All of these moves may have facilitated a shift in the personality of the Brew Crew and others are starting to take notice.
On two occasions the Milwaukee Brewers have been involved in benching clearing incidents.
With just a few weeks of regular season baseball under our belt the Milwaukee Brewers have been involved in two benches clearing incidents and several other intense moments. Rhys Hoskins set the tone on Opening Day with a hard but legal slide into second base that Jeff McNeil took exception to. Benches cleared after this incident and a day later the Mets threw behind Hoskins. The Mets pitcher and manager were later suspended by the league.
Against the Orioles benches again cleared as this time Willy Adames and James McCann had a heated exchange before an at-bat. As tempers flared from both players the benches cleared. No ejections were handed out and Adames then had to complete his at-bat in which that same inning he later scored on a close play at home plate and stared McCann down afterwards. Post game neither player or ball club would reveal what the dispute was about.
Are the Milwaukee Brewers the “New Bad Boys of Baseball?”
On the Talkin Baseball podcast Trevor Plouffe revealed his thoughts on Milwaukee being the new bad boys of baseball. He credited Rhys Hoskins for bringing some swagger to the team from Philadelphia and Murphy giving the team some extra chippiness. Lastly, he mentioned that in the past the Brewers were seemingly a piece away and he hypothesized that perhaps being an emotional team that shows their passion on the field wasn’t something that Craig Counsell wanted or preached.
