Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown admits they just couldn’t match the Milwaukee Bucks’ energy during their Thursday showdown. Nonetheless, the superstar guard appears to hint that rest played a role in their shortcomings in the blowout.
On Saturday after helping power the Celtics to a 145-113 win over the Houston Rockets, Brown was asked in his postgame presser about their performance against the Bucks. It’s worth noting that head coach Joe Mazzulla decided to bench his starters at the start of the second half after Milwaukee built a 37-point lead at halftime.
According to Brown, they have no one to blame but themselves for the loss. However, he did mention that the Bucks were well-rested in the contest, while they were coming off a hard-fought game against the West top-seed Minnesota Timberwolves the day prior.
“We just came out – we couldn’t match their energy. They were well-rested, we were a little beat up, and we came out looking like.. Joe made the call, and you can’t really disagree with it when you’re down 30-plus points,” Brown said when asked about the second-half benching of the Celtics starters in the Bucks game, per Noa Dalzell of Celtics Blog.
To be fair to Jaylen Brown, he’s not hiding the fact that the Boston Celtics played so poorly, to the point that they allowed the Milwaukee Bucks to build a massive lead early where there’s no coming back from it. He also simply mentioned that their opponents had the rest advantage, though it could certainly come out as him making an excuse.
Regardless, the Celtics did show against the Rockets what they are capable of when they are well-rested and healthy.
When Is the Next Milwaukee Bucks vs. Boston Celtics Matchup?
Fortunately for Milwaukee Bucks fans who want to see the Boston Celtics again and prove to Jaylen Brown that their dominant win was no fluke, the two teams still have two more scheduled games this 2023-24 season.
They will play again on March 20, and both teams will have at least a one-day rest before playing each other. The next meeting after that is on April 9, and they will also be well-rested for that contest.
With that said, there should be no more excuses for both sides. Sure enough, whoever wins those remaining matches will have the bragging rights.
So far, the Bucks and Celtics have split their first two games. Boston won their first showdown, albeit just by a three-point margin. Milwaukee won their latest meeting by 33 points.
