It has only been three games but already, the Milwaukee Bucks’ new superstar duo is already being compared to other all-time great pairings in the history of the NBA.
For former All-Star guard Gilbert Arenas, Giannis Anteotkounmpo and Damian Lillard have the makings of being an even greater duo than the Los Angeles Lakers’ iconic pairing of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.
Milwaukee Bucks Duo Draws Legendary Comparison
In a recent episode of the Gil’s Arena podcast, Arenas took the time to heap praise on Giannis and Dame. It has only been three games — and the Bucks have gone 2-1 during that stretch — but already, the Washington Wizards icon is already mentioning their names alongside that of Shaq and Kobe.
As a matter of fact, Arenas believes that Giannis and Lillard have something between them that the Lakers pair never had:
“I mean I just think that [Giannis] understands that you know, for them to win another chip, he has to delegate the power,” Arenas said (h/t Siddid Dey Purkayastha of The Sports Rush). “And that’s usually the problem with superstars on the same team. That the superstar that was there before you know don’t wanna delegate his power. Not understanding that, the strengths he has is for this moment in time that he needs to ball. You know, Shaq and Kobe, they couldn’t delegate the power when it should be the same way. The first 43 minutes, Shaq you are the person. The guy who can make the free throws and hit the big shots from the outside, it’s [Kobe’s] go at it last four-five minutes.”
Arenas’ statement stems from the brief time we’ve seen Antetokounmpo and Lillard share the same court. Again, it has only been three games. However, during this spell, Arenas has seen enough for him to come out with such an encompassing take on Milwaukee’s new duo.
In spite of their differences, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal won three straight championships together with the Lakers. Whether or not Giannis and Dame will be able to reach that same heights remains to be seen.
