There’s no denying that Milwaukee Bucks head coach Adrian Griffin will play an integral role in the development of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard’s superstar partnership. In fact, apart from Giannis and Dame themselves, one could argue that Griffin is the most important factor in making sure that this duo will work out.
For his part, it is clear that Griffin is well aware of the massive responsibility that has fallen on his lap.
Milwaukee Bucks Coach Adrian Griffin on Giannis-Dame Chemistry
Coach Griff admits that they aren’t there yet in terms of tapping into the true potential of this unprecedented partnership. Griffin, of all people, knows that this isn’t going to happen overnight. He also understands, however, that he must do whatever it takes to expedite the process:
“Just figuring out the dynamics, it just takes time. It’s gradually going up,” Griffin said, via Eric Nehm of The Athletic. “I think, [in] the last two games, we have the highest pick-and-roll frequency for our team and Dame and Giannis. I knew it was going to take a little bit of time. And that’s all it is, building the chemistry with each other. I think, on my part, it’s just if if I need to call plays to kind of manufacture a little bit more, but they’re learning, in the flow of the game, to play off each other, and I think that’s the biggest thing.“
Griffin touched on the Bucks’ tendency to run the pick-and-roll through Dame and Giannis. At this point, this duo has not perfected their two-man game. Griffin, Lillard, Antetokounmpo, and pretty much everybody knows that the Bucks will only achieve ultimate success if their two superstars get on the same wavelength.
They’re not there yet. They will arrive sooner rather than later, though, and that’s going to be a problem for the rest of the league.
