The NBA trade deadline is fast approaching and the Milwaukee Bucks haven’t made a move yet to address a lingering weakness when it comes to defense. But if things go well, the team can get better by acquiring a defensive ace from the Dallas Mavericks.
As compared to last season’s fourth-place ranked defense, the Bucks are now in 19th among all 30 teams in the league. The biggest change here is swapping Jrue Holiday, a two-way specialist, with Damian Lillard. And although the former Portland Trail Blazers star is an upgrade on offense, especially when paired with Giannis Antetokounmpo, his lackluster defense is a liability for Milwaukee.
This season, the Bucks are in need of an upgrade in that area. With the recent firing of Adrian Griffin, Doc Rivers’ coaching debut marred by a string of losses, and possible injuries to key players, Milwaukee has to do something before the deadline expires. Otherwise, it’ll be a failed season that will potentially waste the duo of Antetokounmpo and Lillard in their prime.
Milwaukee Bucks Acquire Grant Williams From the Dallas Mavericks in a Proposed Trade
When it comes to defense, there are several possible trades the Bucks can explore. One of these is detailed by Eric Nehm in his article for The Athletic:
“On Saturday, the Bucks will play the Dallas Mavericks. One of the Mavericks’ biggest offseason additions was Grant Williams, the 6-foot-6, 25-year-old forward that played the first four seasons of his career with the Boston Celtics, on a four-year, $53.3 million contract that keeps him in Dallas through the 2026-27 season.
For the Bucks, trading for Williams would be an opportunity to try to trade for a distressed asset. Williams is three years younger than Portis and has one more year on his contract than Portis, who has a $13.4 million player option for the 2025-26 season,” Nehm wrote.
The possible addition of Williams will give Milwaukee a hard-nosed defender who can guard multiple positions without needing the ball in his hands on offense. Although losing Bobby Portis may hurt, the upside to having the former Celtic in the lineup might be too good to pass up.
It remains to be seen whether Milwaukee jumps the gun on this trade or not. Stay tuned in the following days to see what the Bucks will do before the trade deadline expires.
