Milwaukee Bucks big man Brook Lopez has a reputation for being one of the most dominant defenders in the NBA today. The fact that he was the runner-up for last season’s Defensive Player of the Year is a clear testament to this fact.
However, every now and again, Lopez busts out on the offensive end. Wednesday’s eruption against the Boston Celtics is a perfect example of the same.
Milwaukee Bucks Vet Brook Lopez Shines Vs. Celtics
Considering how there was no shortage of superstars during Wednesday’s high-profile matchup, it does come as a surprise that it was Lopez who emerged as the top-scorer in the game. The 35-year-old finished with a season-high 28 points on a very efficient 12-of-18 shooting. He also added two triples, seven rebounds, an assist, a steal, a block, and zero turnovers to round out an excellent all-around performance.
“I was just trying to help my team, that’s all it ever is,” Lopez said after the game, via Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “I’m just out there trying to help my team win, doing what I can to help the team win.”
Brook Lopez’s Heroics Put to Waste
In the end, however, Lopez’s eye-opening performance did not matter too much. In spite of a late surge from the Bucks, the Celtics were able to hold off their opponents to secure a 119-116 victory.
The comeback attempt was too little, too late for Milwaukee, who allowed their opponents to totally dominate them in a lopsided first half.
“There were things in the first half we obviously could’ve done better right from the get go, so we focused on fixing those things,” he said. “But there were a lot of things we were doing right that we knew we just had to keep doing, just keep being us.”
Lopez is staying positive after the loss, though. As he implied, it’s now all about taking away whatever they can out of this defeat and using that to further improve as a unit.
