The Milwaukee Brewers starting pitching depth was tested a season ago as Brandon Woodruff missed significant time, Aaron Ashby did not pitch, and Adrian Houser, Wade Miley, Julio Teheran, and Eric Lauer all missed time with injuries.
Heading into 2024 Milwaukee’s starting pitching depth may not be as deep as a season ago. Ace Corbin Burnes has departed and Brandon Woodruff will miss most and potentially all of the season. This moves Freddy Peralta up to the number one starter, Wade Miley second, and then any of Colin Rea, Joe Ross, DL Hall, Janson Junk, Aaron Ashby, and potentially Robert Gasser as options to round out the rest of the rotation.
Recently it was announced that one of these projected 2024 starting pitchers has a 50-50 chance to be ready to start the season.
Wade Miley may not be ready to start the regular season.
Manager Pat Murphy relayed that Wade Miley may not be ready to start the regular season. He did not go into specifics but he did give a time frame of knowing for sure in about 10 days.
While vague on the specifics, Pat Murphy indicated this morning that Wade Miley is “50-50” to be ready to start the regular season.
“We’ll let you know more in about 10 days,” he said.

Entering spring training Wade Miley was getting over an illness.
As mentioned above Pat Murphy did not go into specifics as to why Wade Miley may not be ready to start the season. However when pitchers and catchers did report to camp a note was made that he was getting an illness that caused him to lose upwards of 10 lbs. Another consideration is that a season ago he missed some starts due to his elbow flaring up, but there’s been no indication as to what exactly is putting his status up in the air.
What does this mean going forward for the Milwaukee Brewers?
Right now there are no implications, but if Wade Miley is unable to go they will be out of a reliable pitcher for an unknown period of time. Miley has a significant injury history so odds are that he wouldn’t have made a start every fifth day anyway, but this may mean that someone else has to step up sooner and reliably cover some innings.
