The Milwaukee Brewers squared off against the San Diego Padres for their first spring training game of 2024. San Diego will be traveling to Seoul, South Korea in March for a pair of games and had already played two Cactus League games prior to Saturdays game that served as the spring debut for the Brew Crew. In this contest the Brewers won by a score of 11-7.
Here we focus on three takeaways from the game.
Three takeaways from the Milwaukee Brewers-San Diego Padres game on Saturday, February 24.
Takeaway #1: Sal Frelick had a perfect day at the plate and at third base.
Playing third base and batting leadoff against the Padres was Sal Frelick. Offensively he finished 2-2 with a double, two walks, and a stolen base. His only blunder was getting thrown out by right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr after rounding first base. Defensively he had two opportunities to make plays and he made them both with ease.
“Felt good. It’s funny we were joking that we kinda knew the first ball was gonna come to me. That’s how baseball works. I was pretty geared up for the first one… even with not getting balls just kinda like being in the right position and backing up in certain situations, being a cutoff man, stuff like that.”
Sal Frelick comments on his first game at third base.
Takeaway #2: Wes Clarke had a multi home run game.
30th ranked Brewers prospect Wes Clarke got the start at designated hitter in this game and batted ninth. He belted a two run home run in his first at-bat and then hit another long ball later on. The 24 year old hit 26 home runs in Double-A last season and is picking right up where he left off.
Takeaway #3: Thyago Vieira was the only pitcher on the 40-man roster to make an appearance.
Flame throwing Thyago Vieira signed a minor league contract with the Brewers prior to the start of last season. He eventually was added to the 40-man roster and appeared in two games for Milwaukee. In his spring training debut his outing went as follows: walk, walk, double play, walk, and strikeout.
