The Milwaukee Brewers added two bats and a left-handed reliever at the trade deadline this year. Their offense was an obvious weak spot and they ended up adding to veteran hitters in Carlos Santana and Mark Canha. Joining the bullpen is veteran southpaw Andrew Chafin.
It will be interesting to see if the combination of Carlos Santana and Mark Canha helps improve this offense or not, but one recent article from MLB Pipeline indicated that promoting a left-handed pitcher from their farm system could be a potentially impactful callup.
Robert Gasser was listed as a one potentially impactful callup for the Milwaukee Brewers to consider this year.
The Brewers acquired Robert Gasser at the trade deadline a season ago when they traded away Josh Hader. He has been playing in Triple-A this year, has fixed some command issues that limited him early on, and is generating a ton of strikeouts. Here is what the MLB Pipeline team had to say about him.
Milwaukee famously needs lineup help, so there’s a temptation to put Tyler Black or even Jackson Chourio here. But the truth is, unlike those two, Gasser actually has Triple-A experience, and he actually leads the International League with 114 strikeouts in 95 1/3 innings. The left-hander has been upping the usage on his upper-80s cutter as the season has gone on, while also showing a low-90s four-seam and sinker and 79-81 mph slider. You can never have too much pitching, and Milwaukee will likely be tempted to see how Gasser can help their NL Central chances.
It will be interesting to see if the Brewers elect to call up Robert Gasser or not. Back in 2018 both Corbin Burnes and Brandon Woodruff were utilized in bullpen roles during Milwaukee’s deep post season run, so why not see what Gasser can do?
