Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Jake Cousins was promoted to the big leagues on April 24, 2023. 11 days later he is being optioned back down after appearing in three games. During those three appearances he covered 4.2 innings, allowed one earned run, walked four, and struck out four.
In regards to potential, Jake Cousins has the ceiling of a high leverage reliever. He excelled during a short 30 game stint with the Brewers in 2021 where he pitched to a 2.70 ERA over 30 innings pitched, struck out 44 batters, and recorded seven holds. Unfortunately a shaky start with command and an eventual trip on the injured list with an elbow injury in 2022 derailed all of last season.
Replacing him on the active roster is the left-handed pitcher Bennett Sousa. Sousa was acquired via trade from the Cincinnati Reds approximately one month ago. His big league experience is limited to just 20 innings, so this move by the Brewers likely signifies that they want to see what they have in him.

Left-handed throwing Bennett Sousa will join Hoby Milner as the only other active left-handed reliever on the Brewers. Alex Claudio was briefly up in the big leagues, but he has since been placed back in the minor leagues. If Sousa can have success, he could carve out a role with the Brewers. On the contrary early struggles could mean a quick exit for him.
