The Milwaukee Brewers have swung a trade for left-handed pitcher Bennett Sousa. This trade was completed with the Cincinnati Reds in which the Brew Crew gave up cash and international bonus money in order to acquire the 28 year old. Sousa will begin his Brewers career in Triple-A Nashville.
This trade comes in wake of Milwaukee placing Aaron Ashby on the 60 day injured list. Ashby recently underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery and at best could be available in late August or September. With this move, Bennett Sousa claimed the open spot on the 40-man roster.
The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired Bennett Sousa via trade from the Cincinnati Reds.
Sousa, an experienced college arm, was drafted twice in the MLB draft. He was selected in the 34th round in 2017 by the Washington Nationals, but he elected to go back and play a fourth season. A year later the Chicago White Sox selected him in the 10th round.
Last season Sousa made his MLB debut with the White Sox. He received only 20 innings of big league experience and then was designated for assignment during the offseason. The Reds quickly claimed him, but similarly they let him go last week.
Throughout his minor league career, Sousa has been excellent. He carries a career 2.82 ERA in 133 appearances and has recorded 23 saves. On the mound, he utilizes a fastball in the mid 90’s and a slider.
Being a left-handed reliever should play to Sousa’s favor in the short term. Currently Hoby Milner is the only left-handed reliever in the bullpen. The Crew does have Alex Claduio on a minor league contract and Justin Wilson rehabbing from injury, but Sousa may get the first chance at playing time should something happen to Milner.
Hopefully a third change of scenery will be what Sousa needs to get established in the big leagues. We’ve seen players come to Milwaukee before and have success after changing teams multiple times, so it’s not out of the question.
