The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to a contract with a 34 year old former Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher. This pitcher made his MLB debut with the Brew Crew in 2012, was a staple in their starting rotation from 2013-2016, and then struggled in 2017 before going on to play for the Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers from 2018-2022.
Former Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Wily Peralta has signed a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
In 2023 Wily Peralta played within the Washington Nationals organization but did not make a big league appearance. Things didn’t go well as he had a 6.31 ERA in 102.2 innings pitched. He now has received an invite to the Pirates big league camp.
What kind of role will Willy Peralta be competing for with the Pittsburgh Pirates?
Since 2017, his final year with the Brewers, Willy Peralta has operated mostly out of the bullpen. All 79 of his game appearances with the Royals came as a reliever, but with the Detroit Tigers he operated as both a starter and a reliever. If he earns a roster spot with the Pirates he could see time at the back end of their starting rotation or as a long reliever in the bullpen.
How did Wily Peralta perform as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers?
After posting a 2.48 ERA in 29 innings of work during the 2012 season, Wily Peralta went on to become a staple in their rotation for the next four seasons. He posted a 4.18 ERA over 647.1 innings pitched, he started 32 games in both the 2013 and 2014 seasons, 23 games in 2015, and 20 in 2016.
