The Milwaukee Brewers and the Brisbane Bandits have a good relationship in which prospects go there and play baseball during the winter months. Brisane is a part of the Australian Baseball League. Last winter former prospect Robert Moore played exceptionally well there. This year they have a former Indy ball pitcher dominating the league.
Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Sam Gardner is dominating with the Brisbane Bandits.
27 year old reliever Sam Gardner signed with the Brewers last June. The former Indy ball pitcher began his career with the Brew Crew by playing for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Despite the late start he ended up throwing 44.2 innings over 21 appearances, collected three saves, struck out 59 batters, and had a 2.22 ERA.
In Australia the right-handed hurler has not allowed an earned run across 18.1 innings pitched. He has struck out an astonishing 40 batters, has two holds, and one save. Based on his results with the Brewers and the Bandits it’s clear that a transition to the bullpen may have saved his career in baseball.
Prior to signing with Milwaukee Sam Gardner was utilized primarily as a starting pitcher in both college and independent ball with the Gateway Grizzles. In 2022 he switched to the bullpen, his season strikeout numbers rose to a 12.4 K:9, and he has been a punch out machine ever since.
The Brewers have to be excited with what they are seeing out of this journeyman pitcher. Because of his age and experience it’s possible that Milwaukee tests him further next year by advancing him along quickly and possibly skipping a few levels.
