The Milwaukee Brewers pummeled the New York Mets in their home opener on Monday afternoon by a score of 10-0. Brew Crew rookie Brice Turang was the star of the game as his first career home run went for a grand slam and pitcher Freddy Peralta was not scored upon over six innings. On the other side, the Mets looked very slow and as a team they had four pitch clock violations.
The Mets had Carlos Carrasco on the mound and before he delivered his first pitch of the game he was issued a pitch clock violation. He became the first pitcher to start a game down in the count 1-0 without throwing a pitch. Carrasco ended the game with two violations. Other Mets players with pitch clock violations were hitters Omar Narvaez and Mark Canha.
Following the game, opposing manager of the Milwaukee Brewers Buck Showalter said the pitch clock pace was “different”.
Showalter wasn’t trying to say that the Brewers had a home field advantage with the pitch clock, rather he was trying to say that his players did not adjust accordingly. His full quote reads, “The clock was a little different pace today, and we didn’t make a very good adjustment to it. Everyone is going through some adjustment period. It’s umpires, it’s clock operators, it’s us, it’s the other team we’re playing. You better figure it out because it’s not going away.”
In the ninth inning, Mark Canha’s pitch clock violation resulted in a strikeout. Here is the video that clearly shows that he did not engage the pitcher until the six second mark. Hitters are supposed to be ready to hit by eight seconds remaining.
