The Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets had to wait an extra day before kicking off their regular season as rain delayed the start of their season. They were not the only match up that got postponed as the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves did as well.
With the highly anticipated Opening Day match up between the Brewers and Mets here, let’s take a look at some players from each side who will be absent on Opening Day.
Two Milwaukee Brewers players who will be absent on Opening Day.
Of players who stood a high chance of playing on Opening Day there are two players that Milwaukee will be without. They are starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff and closer Devin Williams.
Woodruff underwent shoulder surgery this off-season and will not pitch in 2024. If he was healthy he likely would have been the Opening Day starter. Additionally Williams is on the injured list with stress fractures in his back. From the time of his diagnosis (end of spring training) his earliest expected time frame back is 12 weeks.
Three New York Mets players who will be absent on Opening Day.
This year the Mets have gained closer Edwin Diaz back after he sustained a tendon injury in last year’s World Baseball classic, but they will be without ace Kodai Senga, infielder Ronny Mauricio, and recently signed veteran J.D. Martinez.
Senga has been dealing with a shoulder injury for quite some time and isn’t expected back until at least May. Mauricio tore his ACL during a baseball game over the Winter and Martinez signed late in spring and has not yet ramped up enough to play in a big league game.
