The Milwaukee Brewers are in need of starting pitchers this off-season. They are in this situation because they unfortunately had to non-tender Brandon Woodruff, Wade Miley declined his half of a mutual option, Eric Lauer elected free agency after being outrighted, and Corbin Burnes is constantly being mentioned in trade rumors.
Milwaukee does have some rising starting pitching prospects who could contribute in 2024. Those players are Robert Gasser, Carlos Rodriguez, and Jacob Misiorowski. If the Brewers want to add some other controllable assets who do have MLB experience they should be contacting the Miami Marlins and inquiring about two of their pitchers who reportedly have been generating trade interest.
Miami Marlins starting pitchers Edward Cabrera and Trevor Rogers are drawing trade interesting. Should the Milwaukee Brewers pursue?
According to a report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic Miami is receiving interest for right-handed starting pitcher Edward Cabrera and southpaw Trevor Rogers. The Marlins have dealt from their pool of pitching depth in the past and they could look to do so again this winter. If they do they may be looking to address areas of need such as catcher, shortstop, and outfield.
Of these two pitchers Edward Cabrera is viewed to have a higher trade value due to his performance and team control. The 25 year old has a career 4.01 ERA across 197.2 innings pitched and 41 starts. He additionally is currently in pre-arbitration and will not be a free agent until 2029. It is likely that he will be eligible for super two status next off-season and will receive four years of arbitration instead of three.
On the other hand Trevor Rogers has a 4.12 career ERA across 286 innings pitched and 59 starts. He appeared in just four games in 2023, but he made 23 starts in 2022 and 25 during his rookie campaign in 2021 when he finished second in rookie of the year voting. His projected 2024 arbitration salary is estimated to be $1.50 million and he will be eligible for free agency in 2028.
If Milwaukee wants to acquire either one of these prospects they may have to be willing to part ways with one of their young controllable outfielders. As mentioned that is a position of need for the Marlins and a swap of players could mutually benefit each side. They could also look to trade some of their prospects in which Jeferson Quero headlines the catching group and Eric Brown Jr the shortstops.
It will be interesting to hear if Milwaukee is interested in either of these pitchers or not. Winter Meetings are coming up the first week of December, so perhaps something will come to fruition then.
