The Milwaukee Brewers and Jackson Chourio made history this off-season by agreeing to a contract extension worth $82 million guaranteed and the ability to earn $142.5 million. Despite the contract Milwaukee did not initially fully commit to him making the 2024 Opening Day roster. That was true until a few days ago when they officially announced that he would break camp with the big league team.
Following the Brewers announcement of Chourio making the Opening Day roster Jon Heyman at the New York Post wrote a piece about how the 20 year old celebrated by having a soda with some friends. Heyman also briefly touched on his contract and he revealed that the initial discussions started $40 million lower than where they ended up.
Jackson Chourio and the Milwaukee Brewers initially started their contract extension discussion at $38 million.
According to Heyman’s report the Brewers and Chourio initially started discussing a contract extension worth $38 million. Had that been the end result an extension worth that much would have been the third largest contract of a prospect yet to make their MLB debut. A $38 million contract extension would have still trailed Eloy Jimenez at $43 million and Luis Robert at $50 million.
The contract that set a new standard for minor leaguers was many months in coming for the wunderkind, who rose all the way to No. 2 in prospect rankings. Talks started at $38M, and about four months later (Jackson) Chourio had a longer deal for more than twice the guarantee.
