The Milwaukee Brewers and Jackson Chourio are expected to officially announce a contract extension over Winter Meetings. This deal would make him the highest paid player to ever sign such a deal before making his MLB debut. Luis Roberts of the Chicago White Sox previously held this record when he signed for six years, $50 million.
Initial rumors from various reporters have indicated that the Jackson Chourio deal is expected to be eight years in duration and will guarantee him $82 million. Ken Rosenthal and Jon Heyman are also indicating that between contract options and incentives the total value of his deal could max out at $142.5 million.
Milwaukee Brewers: Jackson Chourio reportedly could earn up to $142.5 million due to contract options and incentives.
With $82 million reportedly being guaranteed in Jackson Chourio’s eight year deal, this leaves $62 million to account for. According to Ken Rosenthal his contract will include two options years with both valued at $25 million. Jon Heyman has also indicated that there will be a $2 million buyout included should Milwaukee not pick up one of his option years, so the remaining money after that will all be based on incentives.
The incentive based escalators in Jackson Chourio’s contract, again according to Ken Rosenthal, will be based on MVP votes. For a highly regarded prospect who is young and healthy this is a fair way to offer him more money.
