The Milwaukee Brewers signing of catcher/designated hitter Gary Sanchez came with some fireworks. After multiple MLB Insiders revealed that a one year, $7 million deal was in place the team failed to formally announce things for two weeks. Turns out that during his physical an issue popped up that caused the two sides to re-negotiate.
Once the signing was official Gary Sanchez revealed that he sustained an off-season injury to his right wrist. This is the same wrist that was fractured by a hit-by-pitch last September and prematurely ended his season. Sanchez noted that the fracture had fully healed and he tweaked his wrist while in the weight room.
Gary Sanchez has been taking it slow in spring training since signing.
After Sanchez officially signed for a lower base salary but with incentives that could push his 2024 deal up to the original $7 million, the Brewers elected to not have him start camp with all the other players. This was reported on February 22 and at that time they indicated that he was day-to-day but overall was feeling good.
The Milwaukee Brewers have a target spring training debut date for Gary Sanchez.
Per Todd Rosiak the Brewers are looking at March 14, 2024 as the Cactus League debut date for Gary Sanchez. At that time there will be exactly 14 days until opening day. The last spring training game for Milwaukee is March 26.
