The Milwaukee Brewers supposedly had a deal in place with free agent catcher/designated hitter Gary Sanchez. Details leaked last week indicating that he had agreed to a one year, $7 million contract. After he failed to report with all the other pitchers and catchers, one MLB Insider spoke out and provided context on the situation.
Robert Murray confirms a gloomy outlook on Gary Sanchez heading to the Milwaukee Brewers.
On the Baseball Insiders podcast Robert Murray took time to discuss what he knows about the Gary Sanchez situation. He indicated that sources informed him that a done deal was confirmed. When the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported he was not in camp and had not yet signed Murray reached out to all of his Brewers contacts. He never heard back from any of them.
What is the state of the Brewers without Gary Sanchez?
Milwaukee reportedly adding Gary Sanchez meant that they were securing a home run threat at the plate, a veteran with post-season experience, and an improving defensive catcher. Having Sanchez would have provided the Brewers with the ability to keep both his bat and William Contreras in the lineup daily by having them alternate behind the dish and at designated hitter.
Without Sanchez on the team Eric Haase likely enters the year as the backup catcher. No Sanchez may also make Austin Nola think twice about opting out of his minor league contract prior to opening day. Lastly it opens up playing opportunities for Jake Bauers at designated hitter or first base.
Will the Brewers make another move if the Gary Sanchez deal falls through?
After trading Corbin Burnes and freeing up approximately $15 million in payroll the Brewers wasted no time signing Jacob Junis to a $7 million deal and then reportedly Gary Sanchez for the same price. If Sanchez’s deal falls through theoretically we know that if the right player is out there for $7 million Milwaukee will go get them.
