Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras was announced as a silver slugger award winner. By winning this award he became the first player in the organization’s history to win it as a catcher. This is quite the accomplishment when you think about it because that means as members of the Brewers Ted Simmons, B.J. Surhoff, or Jonathan Lucroy never won it.
William Contreras wins the 2023 Silver Slugger award and becomes the first Milwaukee Brewers catcher to accomplish this.
During his first season with Milwaukee William Contreras slashed .289/.367/.457 with 17 home runs and 78 RBI. His longest hitting streak was 18 games and he had a 20 game on-base streak at one point. Additionally William Contreras led all qualified catchers in batting average, slugging percentage, doubles (38), extra-base hits (56), and OPS (.825).
Other silver slugger finalists at the catcher position this year were Sean Murphy (Atlanta Braves), J.T. Realmuto (Philadelphia Phillies), and Will Smith (Los Angeles Dodgers). William Contreras winning the 2023 silver slugger award marks the first time in his young career that he took home this hardware.
As mentioned above some other former great Brewers catchers never won the award. Notably Jonathan Lucroy was a victim of San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey winning the award from 2012-2015, 2017, and 2021. Jonthan Lucroy’s best shot at edging Buster Posey out was in 2014 when he had a .301 batting average and a league leading 53 doubles. Unfortunately Buster Posey that year hit for a .311 batting average with 24 home runs and 103 RBI.
