Matt LaFleur Places Blame After 2-Minute Offense Enrages Aaron Rodgers

Matt LaFleur addressed the final drive in regulation

The final drive in regulation didn’t make much sense for the Green Bay Packers. They ran the ball twice and attempted a pass on third and one. With the drive starting on the Green Bay 33-yard line and 1:38 on the clock, the Packers needed to gain a lot of yards in a hurry to get in field goal range to win the game. Instead, the poor sequence ended with quarterback Aaron Rodgers jawing at head coach Matt LaFleur.

Fortunately for the Packers, the Dallas Cowboys didn’t do anything on the next drive, and the game went to overtime. The Packers would win the game and snap their five-game losing streak. After the game, LaFleur addressed the final drive before overtime. According to Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated, LaFleur said he was indecisive on the sequence. He took the blame for the failure and said the Packers deviated from letting Rodgers make decisions on the drive.

LaFleur on the 2-minute drill: Too much "indecision" on his part. Needed 30-plus yards to get to a field goal. Usually gives Rodgers a "ton of freedom to run the show" but less this time. "That was on me," LaFleur says.

The Packers should have probably flipped the script on that drive. Two early-down runs with the clock winding down and needing about 30 yards for a field goal wasn’t a wise decision. And if they were going to run it on the first two plays, the Packers should have run on third and one so they could bleed more of the clock if they didn’t get a first down. Blowing a critical timeout before the third down play limited what the Packers could do, as they only had one timeout remaining if they converted the first down in bounds.

At least this is a lesson the Packers can learn after a win. After losses, the Packers have had to stew on some of these poor in-game decisions. Let’s see if LaFleur learns from this and actually changes the plan the next time the Packers run their two-minute offense.
