Game Breakdown
Shaka Smart’s Marquette Golden Eagles look to continue their recent run of form as they travel to Queens to face the St. John’s Red Storm in their fifth Big East contest of the season. Each of the Golden Eagles’ four losses, this season have all been close affairs, with their most lopsided defeat coming at the hands of the number one team in the nation, the Purdue Boilermakers by a narrow 75-70 margin. Outside of a double OT loss to Providence in their final game before Christmas, Marquette has been perfect in conference play, defeating the likes of Creighton, Seton Hall, and most recently, Villanova, on New Year’s Eve, this past Saturday afternoon.
Led by Sophomore Guard, Kam Jones, the Golden Eagles got a much-needed jolt from their bench in the form of another Sophomore Guard, Stevie Mitchell, who dropped a career-high 19 points Marquette’s aforementioned victory over Villanova, this past weekend. Looking to get the ball to his scorers will be yet another Sophomore Guard, Tyler Kolek, who’s 7.5 assists per game are good enough for third in the nation.
A potential worry for the Golden Eagles could be the undersized rim protecter, Oso Ighodaro, who’ll be looking to prevent St. John’s leading scorer, 6-foot-11, Senior big man, Joel Soriano, who’s putting up All Conference-type numbers to begin his season as the Yonkers, New York-native is dropping 15.8 points per game to go along with 12.2 rebounds per contest, both good enough for top-seven in the conference, with the 12+ rebounds per game leading the way in the Big East, by nearly three-full rebounds over Creighton’s Baylor Scheierman.
Game Prediction
When it comes down to who’ll pull out a conference win, tonight, while Soriano’s size will surely be an issue for the Golden Eagles, guard play will be what secures the fourth Big East win of the season for Marquette in a close, but comfortable affair Tuesday evening in Queens.
