The Los Angeles Chargers and Green Bay Packers will start preparing for their Week 11 matchup this week. The Packers (3-6) are coming off yet another brutal loss. This time it was at the hands of a Pittsburgh Steelers as they fell 23-19.
The Chargers are also coming off a rough loss on Sunday as they lost a thriller to the Detroit Lions 41-38. That loss dropped Los Angeles to 4-5 on the year. The Chargers now figure to be in “win now” mode the rest of the year as they try to save their playoff chances. However, the Chargers will have to do that without one of their 25-year-old linebackers.
The Los Angeles Rams Lose Linebacker Chris Rumph II Prior To Their Matchup With The Green Bay Packers
Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports reported:
The Los Angeles Chargers will be without a member of their defense for the remainder of the season after suffering a rare pregame injury. Linebacker Chris Rumph II suffered a foot fracture that is expected to sideline him for the rest of the 2023 regular season, according to NFL Media.
The 25-year-old sustained the injury during warmups and was ruled out by the team just moments before kickoff.
While not uncommon, it is rare to see a player go down with an injury during warmups and it’s unclear what Rumph was specifically doing that caused the foot fracture. He was spotted by reporters after the game leaving the locker room on crutches and a walking boot.
In any event, L.A. will need to go forward without Rumph and lean on Joey Bosa, Khalil Mack, and Tuli Tuipulotu, who make up the rest of the linebacker unit.
What Does This Mean For The Packers-Chargers Matchup?
The Chargers selected Rumph in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Duke. During his career, he has made 39 tackles and three sacks in 37 regular season games. Over the course of six games in 2023, Rumph recorded five tackles and one fumble recovery while playing on 24% of the defensive snaps and 65% of the special teams snaps.
The loss of Rumph won’t impact the outcome of the game, however, it will test the Chargers’ special teams depth. The Packers had a massive special teams blunder on Sunday Vs. the Steelers that saw Josiah Deguara completely whiff on block. The whiff allowed the Steelers to block the Packers extra point attempt after a touchdown.
Special teams will certainly come into play against the Chargers. Being mistake free is a must.
