The Packers announced their 2022 captains today. One notable person not voted to be a captain was star cornerback Jaire Alexander. During the press interviews, Jaire Alexander had some comments on not being named captain.
Jaire Alexander Took It Personal
Jaire Alexander, who was a team captain last year, on if he took it personal that he wasn’t voted as one of the six captains this year: “Yeah I did.”
He didn’t elaborate on why but added: “Happy for the guys who were (voted captains) and I’ll keep doing what I’m doing.”

Alexander did not elaborate much but when asked if he took it personal to not be voted a captain he simply responded with, “Yeah I did”. From a talent perspective, Alexander is probably the best player for the Packers on defense. It was a little bit of a surprise to not see him get voted by his team as a captain. However, the defense is full of studs and safety Adrian Amos is definitely not a bad choice. Jaire did go on to say that he is happy for the guys who were voted in and he is going to keep doing his job.
Why Didn’t His Team Vote Him As Captain?
Alexander missed basically all of last season. He played the first four games before being out. Head coach Matt LaFleur said that this is a factor for many players when voting. We all are prisoners of the moment and players remember the most recent season. Adrian Amos, De’Vondre Campbell and Kenny Clark all had amazing 2021 seasons. LaFleur used Mason Crosby as an example. He had been named a captain in the past but was not around training camp due to a knee injury. He wasn’t voted as a captain this year either. Not being around the team last year definitely had an impact on Jaire Alexander not being named a captain.
Should The Packers Be Worried?
In short, no I don’t think so. Alexander just signed a huge deal in the offseason and is with the Packers for the foreseeable future. It makes sense that he is a little hurt by this but hopefully this motivates him to show out on the field and have a huge year. It is something to slightly keep an eye on but ultimately the captain position is more one of personal pride than anything else. Alexander is clearly a prideful person and he was just a little miffed by it.
If Alexander has a huge year, I expect him to be named a team captain. He seems like the type of person that will take this personal and use it as fuel to show up this year.
