The saga between the Indianapolis Colts and All-Pro Running Back Jonathan Taylor continues.
Taylor requested a trade from the team on July 29 after a meeting with team owner Jim Irsay in which Irsay said they would not be extending Taylor’s contract. Irsay tweeted this on July 26 in response to the running back market.
Irsay doubled down on his comments on the running back market and took aim at his star running back upon his trade request in which he said the following.
“If I die tonight and Jonathan Taylor is out of the league, no one’s going to miss us. The league goes on. We know that. The National Football League moves on. (Via Yahoo Sports).
Taylor has not returned to camp since being placed on the PUP list on July 25. Colts Head Coach Shane Steichen provided an update on when Taylor is expected to return.
Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Shane Steichen provides an update on when Jonathan Taylor will report to camp.
Shane Steichen was asked less than a week ago why Taylor hasn’t returned to camp.
Steichen said Taylor was rehabbing his injured ankle.
“If you don’t see him out here he’s rehabbing,”
Steichen didn’t offer any specifics about why Taylor hasn’t returned to camp or confirm or deny ESPN’s Stephen Holder’s report about Taylor rehabbing offsite. (Via Fox 59)
On Sunday, Steichen provided an update on when Taylor is expected to be back practicing with the team.
“He should be back this week. Do I know the exact date he’ll be back? No, but he should be back.” (Via ESPN’s Stephen Holder)
Taylor has said he will only practice if he’s 100% healthy while holding out hope the team will find a trade partner for him. (Via ESPN’s Stephen Holder).
An offseason of distractions for the Indianapolis Colts
Between Jim Irsay’s comments and the Jonathan Taylor situation, it’s been a tumultuous offseason for the Indianapolis Colts. This team cannot afford to have any outside distractions as the focus should be on developing rookie QB Anthony Richardson and giving rookie Head Coach Shane Steichen the tools he needs to be a successful coach in this league.
Instead, what used to be known as one of the most well-run organizations in the league has turned dysfunctional, and there were cracks during the Andrew Luck era that the organization was slipping into becoming an AFC afterthought.
After Luck retired, the franchise no longer had a franchise quarterback and they went for stopgap options for three straight years. Philip Rivers in 2020-21, Carson Wentz in 2021-22, and Matt Ryan in 2022-23. Hopefully, Anthony Richardson can develop his raw-talent enough to become the franchise quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts. This team won’t be competitive this year but in the next three-four years, this team should be back in the playoffs.
