The San Francisco 49ers have traded Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 2024 fourth-round pick. The third overall pick from the 2021 NFL draft is no longer a 49er. Here is the breaking news reported by Ian Rapoport.

The 49ers gave up many resources to get him in 2021, and now he is no longer on the team. This makes the whole 49ers franchise look very bad.

Here is why this news makes the Packers look very smart for how they handled things with Jordan Love:

How The Trey Lance Trade Makes The Packers Look Smart

When the Packers traded up in the 2020 NFL draft for Jordan Love, they only gave up a fourth-round pick, and that is not much to get their potential quarterback of the future. The San Francisco 49ers, however, gave up three first-round picks for Trey Lance in the 2021 NFL Draft. This move may be costly for the 49ers in the long run, as premium draft capital is essential in building an NFL roster.

Packers Showing Faith In Jordan Love

The Packers have shown unwavering faith in Jordan Love since drafting him in 2020. Despite criticism, they developed him for three years with the help of Aaron Rodgers and the coaching staff. Love showed promise in the preseason and regular season games in 2021 and 2022. The Packers then traded Rodgers in the 2023 offseason and used the draft capital to build around Love, giving him a shot to be the next franchise quarterback.

The San Francisco 49ers did not give their third-overall draft pick, Trey Lance, enough time to develop despite knowing he was a project. Additionally, they never fully believed in Lance as their quarterback and were not patient enough with his development. Moreover, Lance was not given his starting job back nor allowed to earn it after he got injured in 2022. The 49ers’ failure to develop Lance could significantly hurt them in the long run, particularly if Brock Purdy does not succeed.

It will be important for the Packers to monitor Jordan Love’s progress this season as he takes on the role of starting quarterback. While it may not be a flawless season for him, his potential is very high, and he will need to perform well enough to secure his position as the team’s next franchise quarterback. The success of Love will impact the job security of both head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst.

The San Francisco 49ers invested heavily in Trey Lance to get him but are rolling with Brock Purdy as their quarterback. That means Kyle Shanahan’s and John Lynch‘s jobs are on the line. Purdy needs to repeat his successful rookie season and hopefully lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl. It needs to happen for the 49ers organization to make up for not handling the Lance situation well.

Packers Locker Room Is All In On Jordan Love

The Green Bay Packers locker room fully supports Jordan Love as their starting quarterback this year, with reports indicating that his teammates are willing to go above and beyond for him. Even backup quarterbacks Sean Clifford and Alex McGough recognize Love’s talent.

Here is an interview with third-string quarterback Alex McGough and his praise of Jordan Love:

#Packers QB Alex McGough with high praise on QB1 when I asked him if he can tell if Jordan Love can be a winning quarterback in the NFL:

"Just the other quarterbacks that I've been with have been to pro-bowls & have won super bowls – [Jordan Love's] got it. He's got all of it." pic.twitter.com/VHaW3IdEwe

    — Kyle Malzhan (@KyleMalzhan) August 22, 2023

This interview just shows how much confidence the whole team has in Jordan Love and knows he can be a true leader of this football team.

It seems that the San Francisco 49ers’ locker room may be divided due to the quarterback situation. Brock Purdy is the starting quarterback, but some players were supporting Trey Lance for the position. Many players had confidence in Lance and spoke highly of him, so news of him being traded could cause some tension.
