The Green Bay Packers decided to move on from three-time pro-bowler after the 2021 season. While Smith had some incredible moments in Green Bay, the relationship soured near the end. Green Bay’s decision to move from Smith played a role in his decision to sign with the Minnesota Vikings.
Following his stint with the Vikings, Smith signed on with the Cleveland Browns. That is where we find ourselves in 2023. Today, news has surfaced that Smith will have to fork over nearly $20,000.
Former Green Bay Packers Defensive End Za’Darius Smith Was Fined Nearly $20,000
According to Chicago Bears beat writer Kevin Fishbain:
Browns defensive end Za’Darius Smith was fined $16,391 for his hit on Bears QB Justin Fields at the end of the first half in last Sunday’s game.
A penalty wasn’t called, however, it came on a Hail Mary attempt to end first half.
His professional career has included stops with the Ravens, Packers, Vikings, and most recently, the Browns. During his career, he recorded 256 tackles, 53.5 sacks, 9 forced fumbles, and 256 total tackles.
Smith’s best stretch of his career came in 2019 and 2020 when he recorded 26.5 sacks in two seasons. He has appeared in eight games in 2023 and has recorded two sacks.
