The Green Bay Packers are still building for the future. Over the last two off-seasons they completely revamped their roster in the form of trades and choosing to move on from veterans at the end of their contract.
In Jordan Love’s first full season starting, the Packers find themselves in a “win and in the playoffs” game in Week 18. While the season has been full of ups and downs, the Packers are certainly optimistic about the teams’ future with Love. Now, the Packers are being pegged to add a massive weapon for their offense.
The Green Bay Packers Are Expected To Target Washington Wide Receiver In 2024
Brennen Rupp of the Packers Wire highlighted what this addition would do for Green Bay:
To complete the wide receiver puzzle, Gutekunst could be tempted to draft a wide receiver in the first round to give Love a bonafide No. 1 wide receiver.
By now everybody knows that the Packers haven’t drafted a wide receiver in the first round since they selected Javon Walker with the 20th overall pick in the 2002 NFL Draft.
A wide receiver that Gutekunst could target in the first round, depending on where the Packers are slotted to pick, is Washington’s Rome Odunze.
Odunze enters the college football playoff matchup against Texas with 81 receptions for 1,428 yards and 13 touchdowns. The most impressive thing regarding Odunze’s season is the fact that he played after suffering a broken rib and a punctured lung. A mere two weeks later Odunze 128 yards and two touchdowns on eight receptions against Oregon.
This comes after Odunze enjoyed a breakout campaign the season prior during Kalen DeBoer’s first season as head coach. Odunze finished the season with 75 receptions for 1,145 yards and seven touchdowns.
Would The Packers Finally Use A Premium Draft Pick On A Wide Receiver?
Brian Gutekunst selected three wide receivers in the 2022 NFL Draft, including Christian Watson (34th overall). In 2023, Green Bay’s general manager selected three more wide receivers, including Jayden Reed with the 50th overall pick.
The team has invested heavily into the position over the last two years. Using a premium draft pick on another wide receiver might not fit the team’s mold. However, getting the chance to add a potential bonafide No.1 wide receiver to this offense WOULD fit the unofficial “youth movement” the team seems to have committed to over the last few off-seasons.
The team does have other needs (specifically safety, running back, tackle) that could be addressed with a premium pick. The Packers will have three picks in the first two rounds (and five in the first three).
