It seems as if more and more people are coming around to the idea that the Green Bay Packers will be trading Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. If that is, indeed, what ends up happening, the Packers will start moving forward with 2020 first round draft pick Jordan Love. Green Bay already has young wide receivers in Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs to build their receiving core around, but they do not have any tight ends outside of Josiah Deguara.
Proposed Trade Lands the Green Bay Packers Tight End Albert Okwuegbunam from Denver

Perhaps the time to do a trade with the Denver Broncos was last year when they showed interest in Aaron Rodgers. Too late, but Denver sure is in need of draft picks, any draft picks, after mortgaging their future for Russell Wilson. Bleacher Report‘s Alex Kay proposes that Green Bay send Denver a fifth round pick in exchange for tight end Albert Okwuegbunam:
“Tight end is a spot the Packers must improve to help their young signal-caller. Robert Tonyan hasn’t been the same player who broke out with 11 touchdown catches in 2020 and is hitting free agency anyway. The club direly needs a safety valve who Love can rely on in crucial situations.
“Albert Okwuegbunam would be an interesting target, as the Denver Broncos’ 2020 fourth-round pick was expected to breakout last season after a promising sophomore campaign. Injuries limited him to eight games, however, and a sensational showing by rookie Greg Dulcich cost him playing time when he was available.
“A fresh start could benefit Okwuegbunam greatly. The Missouri product is still just 24 years old and could be developed in tandem with Love. This is the type of low-risk, high-reward move Green Bay should make to remain competitive in the post-Rodgers era.”
Last season, Okwuegbunam appeared in eight games, as mentioned above, and caught ten passes for 95 yards and a touchdown last season. With the Packers in desperate need at tight end and Okwuegbunam in need of a fresh scene, the idea does make some sense. Plus, he only has one more year left on his rookie deal which means two things. First, he will not be expensive for the Packers to take on in 2023. Second, if it doesn’t work, they are not committed to him long-term.
If it will only cost them a fifth round pick, the Packers may be inclined to do a trade like this.
