Today is a significant in the Green Bay Packers’ (and the NFL) off-season. Today, March 8th at 3pm Central Time is the deadline for any team in the NFL to designate one player they want to franchise tag. Davante Adams is atop the list for potential candidates to be franchise tagged today. According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, the Packers and Adams have talked about a new contract but haven’t made “much progress,” and the team isn’t going to let him get to free agency even if Aaron Rodgers decides he wants to depart Green Bay.
If the tag was used, the Packers would extend their negotiating window with Adams to mid-July, buying valuable time on getting a lucrative extension done with one of the best playmakers in football. But Adams would also immediately count a little over $20.1 million on the salary cap, complicating the Packers’ path to getting under the cap by the start of the new league year on March 16.
Other prime candidates to get the franchise tag by Tuesday’s 4 pm deadline include Packers WR Davante Adams, Bucs WR Chris Godwin, Chargers WR Mike Williams, Bengals S Jessie Bates III, Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz, Dolphins TE Mike Gesicki and Titans edge rusher Harold Landry III.

Aaron Rodgers’ Decision :
The Packers have given Rodgers space to make a decision. He has said all along that a decision would come before free agency. He has even used the two-week franchise tag window as a realistic timeframe for deciding what he wants to do. Today is the last day of that window. Green Bay has apparently made a contract offer to Rodgers that would “alter the quarterback market.” A 3 or 4 year deal would significantly help Green Bay’s ability to alleviate cap space this off-season.
Other things we may hear today:
-
- A possible contract extension for Jaire Alexander
- A multitude of other contract moves once the Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers intentions are stated
Thankfully, answers to all these questions may come today. It’s certainly possible the Packers and everyone else will know by this afternoon what the franchise’s direction will be.
