The Green Bay Packers fell short of their ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl this year. To be fair, the same can be said for 31 other teams in the NFL. And in the case of the Packers, there is little shame in being eliminated from the postseason by the eventual Super Bowl Champions (Philadelphia Eagles).
That being said, there are a few issues on the roster that need to be addressed before Green Bay can truly be considered Super Bowl contenders. After all, they went 0-6 against the best teams in the NFC: Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and Eagles.
One of those holes is at wide receiver, of course, as Christian Watson will be out for most, if not all, of the 2025 season after tearing his ACL in Week 18.
The Green Bay Packers Would Have Needed to Address Wide Receiver Even if Christian Watson Had Not Gotten Hurt
On the surface, none of Green Bay’s wide receivers had what one could call a bad year. Watson had 29 receptions, a career-high 620 yards, and two touchdowns. Despite many fans presuming he drops too many passes, he only had one dropped pass all year long.
Unfortunately, the same thing cannot be said of the other top three wide receivers on the team.
Jayden Reed had 55 receptions for 854 yards and six touchdowns, but had a dropped pass percentage of 12.0%. Romeo Doubs, who was suspended for a game early in the year for conduct detrimental to the team, had 46 receptions for 601 yards and four touchdowns, but a dropped pass percentage of 9.7%.
Finally, Dontayvion Wicks had 39 receptions for 415 yards and five touchdowns, but a dropped pass percentage of 11.8%.
Star quarterback Jordan Love received a great deal of criticism for not taking a larger step forward in 2024, but it is clear that the dropped passes by his receivers played a bigger role in the offense becoming stagnant at times than Love himself.
Clearly, something needs to change.
The Green Bay Packers Are Encouraged to Sign Wide Receiver Tee Higgins in Free Agency
As has been the case for multiple weeks, many Packers fans believe that the team needs to add a bonified number one wide receiver. Counted among these people is current Green Bay running back Josh Jacobs, who said on numerous podcasts last week that he feels the Packers need a veteran wide receiver who can be a leader in that room.
For these reasons, and more, Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report believes that the number one priority for Green Bay should be to enter the Tee Higgins sweepstakes:
“Green Bay should be all-in on pursuing Tee Higgins if the Cincinnati Bengals allow him to test free agency.
“Higgins doesn’t have a Pro Bowl season on his resume, but the fifth-year veteran has racked up at least 908 receiving yards in four out of five seasons. In three of those campaigns, he served as the complementary No. 2 option to Ja’Marr Chase. In a different situation, Higgins can lead an offense as the No. 1 receiver.
“Moreover, coming off a season in which he recorded a career-high 10 touchdown receptions, Higgins can be a closer for Love in the passing game.”
The problem, though, is that Higgins currently has a market value of $25.4 million per year, which is more than the Packers have paid their entire wide receiver room over the last two years combined.
Still, adding a veteran wide receiver is going to cost money, and Brian Gutekunst should not be afraid to spend it. That being said, Higgins has missed the same number of games as Watson over the last two seasons. That price tag may be a bit too high given his injury history.
