The Green Bay Packers were not supposed to be competitive in 2023. At least, not if one believed what the national media was saying about them. Jordan Love was not supposed to be the best first year starter in franchise history. Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets were lightyears better than the Packers. Joe Douglas was a far superior general manager than Brian Gutekunst.
What a difference a year makes! Love did, in fact, have the best first season as a starting quarterback in franchise history. Rodgers tore his Achilles in Week One and the Jets’ season was an absolute mess. And when the dust settled, Gutekunst proved to be a far superior general manager than Douglas.
Most importantly, Green Bay went 9-8, clinched a wild card spot in the NFL playoffs, and won a postseason game on the road against former coach Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys. That is not to say the season was a breeze. It wasn’t, and there were plenty of valleys to go along with the numerous highs.
Going forward, however, the Packers proved that they were right to move on from Rodgers in favor of Love. Their defense, which was inconsistent at best in 2023, has a new leader in defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. Players from Gutekunst’s last two draft classes have emerged as core players, and, as the general manager himself says, the sky is the limit in 2024.
Brian Gutekunst Says the Green Bay Packers Can Win the Super Bowl in 2024
This week, of course, is an important week for the Packers, all other NFL teams, and players hoping to be taken in the 2024 NFL Draft. It is scouting combine week, and Gutekunst is there to observe and interview players the Packers may be interested in adding to their team.
During his media availability, Gutekunst was asked if he thought the Packers could win the Super Bowl this season. “I do,” he replied”
Brian Gutekunst just sat down with local writers for 45 minutes. Plenty coming later, but a couple tidbits:
“Around here, we’ve never hung banners for division championships. It’s not about that.”
Does the Packers GM think they can win the Super Bowl next season?
“I do. I do.”

If the Packers were to win the Super Bowl this year, it would extend their record of 13 NFL Championships, but would be their first win since Aaron Rodgers led the team to victory in Super Bowl XLV.
Why Can the Green Bay Packers Win the Super Bowl?
Of course, a great deal needs to go right for any team to make, much less win, the Super Bowl. The Packers, however, have certainly set the foundation for what could be a championship team.
First, they have their franchise quarterback who had a stellar season in 2023 and is only going to get better. Indeed, some would argue that having a good-to-great quarterback is almost necessary to win the Super Bowl.
Second, the young offense has a year under their belt and will continue to grow together and improve. Jayden Reed broke the franchise rookie record for receptions, and the rest of the young core of wide receivers proved they are among the deepest and most talented overall groups in the NFL.
Third, head coach Matt LaFleur finally decided to move on from former defensive coordinator Joe Barry. While how the defense performs under Jeff Hafley remains to be seen, the prospect of watching players being able to play to their strengths instead of being forced into an antiquated system stirs up hope that Green Bay’s defense could be greatly improved.
