Green Bay Packers Might Know the Secret To Stopping San Francisco 49ers’ Brock Purdy

It looks like the Green Bay Packers know very well how they can slow down San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, at least according to defensive end Devonte Wyatt.

On Wednesday, Wyatt played down Purdy’s ability to make winning plays for the 49ers. According to him, the 49ers QB was able to thrive because of San Francisco’s offensive line. When that line is broken through and there’s pressure on the quarterback, things change.

Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt (95) rushes Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (4) during the fourth quarter of their wild card playoff game Sunday, January 14, 2024 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Green Bay defeated Dallas 48-32.

With that said, Wyatt believes that the secret to completely shutting down Purdy is by pressuring him and forcing him to commit mistakes–which the 25-year-old believes would be frequent if they are able to execute defensively.

“When D-linemen just get pressure into him, he’s always throwing off or it’s behind them or it’s overthrown or short … when you get pressure on him, it’s a guarantee we’ll get a turnover,” Wyatt explained, per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic.

Now it is important to note that Devonte Wyatt’s take has some merit. Brock Purdy had a 113.0 passer rating throughout the regular season. However, that number decreases to 90.2 when he’s under pressure, per Pro Football Focus.

Purdy had made just 55.8 percent of his passes for 1,278 yards and 11 touchdowns while under pressure. He has six interceptions in such moments as well. Considering the completion percentage and interception rate, it’s true that Purdy finds it harder to throw when he’s under pressure.

But at the end of the day, the question is: which QB doesn’t? Despite those numbers, Purdy still ranked fifth in passer rating when under pressure.

Green Bay Packers Can’t Underestimate Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers

While it’s good that Devonte Wyatt and the Green Bay Packers are brimming with confidence, it would be a mistake if they underestimate their opponents. Sure, they beat the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round, but the San Francisco 49ers are no Cowboys.

The Niners are the best team in the NFC for a reason, and they have a Top 2 offense because of their consistency. If it’s so easy to put Purdy under pressure, San Francisco won’t even make the playoffs.

At the end of the day, the Packers need to fight with the same hunger and underdog mentality like they had against the Cowboys. They cannot play with so much complacency because it could very well doom them.
