Green Bay Packers news: The Packers have been making moves. On Saturday, the team released defensive lineman Jonathan Garvin to open up a spot on their squad. As it turns out, Green Bay had their eyes on center James Empey, who is now set to join the Packers after he was recently waived by the Tennessee Titans.
Green Bay Packers News: Team Claims James Empey Off Waivers
According to Packers reporter Rob Demovsky of ESPN, Green Bay has decided to claim Empey from the waiver wire:
“The Packers have claimed C James Empey off waivers from the Titans. He should take the roster spot open when the Packers cut Jonathan Garvin yesterday,” Demovsky wrote in his tweet.
The Packers are looking for depth at center as they head into the preseason, and they see Empey as the right man for the job. The 26-year-old, who played for Brigham Young University at the collegiate level, will now get another shot at his NFL dream. This is after he was deemed surplus to requirements in Tennessee a few days ago.
Empey will now look to finally break through the ranks in Green Bay after he went undrafted in 2022. He had a solid preseason with the Dallas Cowboys last year, but he failed to make the cut. Empey signed with the Miami Dolphins during the season, but he never got the chance to play for them. There are no guarantees for him in Green Bay, but at least he’s been given a new lease on life and perhaps, the change in scenery he requires to reach the next level.
Green Bay Packers News: Jonathan Garvin Gets the Boot
On Friday, the Packers made the tough decision to part ways with Jonathan Garvin, who has been in Green Bay for the past three seasons. The former seventh-round pick was in the final year of his four-season contract. He will now hit free agency with the hope of signing with a new team before the start of the new season.
