The Green Bay Packers have been meeting with different NFL players throughout the NFL scouting combine this week in Indianapolis, Indiana. The NFL Draft will take place next month and Green Bay will have 11 selections in that draft.
The Packers will select 28th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. Some of the needs for Green Bay will be running back, offensive line, safety, and cornerback. They have met some cornerback prospects and other prospects throughout the NFL scouting combine up to this point.
Missouri Cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. Met With the Green Bay Packers at the NFL Scouting Combine on Wednesday
One of the biggest needs for the Packers entering the 2024 NFL Draft is cornerback. On Wednesday, they met with Missouri cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. He has the potential to be a starting cornerback in the NFL. There are a lot of questions at cornerback for the Green Bay Packers this offseason.
There best cornerback on the roster is currently Jaire Alexander, but he was hurt most of last season and who knows if general manager Brian Gutekunst is going to make him expendable or not. Kelsean Nixon is also a free agent and they also traded away Rasul Douglas to the Buffalo Bills before the NFL Trade Deadline.
Rakestraw Jr. is 6’0″ and weighs 188 lbs. He had 35 total tackles, one forced fumble, and zero interceptions last season, along with four pass deflections. Those stats mean that quarterbacks did not want to target his side. This is the kind of defensive back the Green Bay Packers needs to draft.
According to NFLDraftBuzz.com, they are comparing him to Devon Witherspoon on the Seattle Seahawks. He had a very good rookie season with Seattle. Ennis Rakestraw Jr. strengths listed on the same website are as follows:
“Instinctual player with a keen understanding of the game, showcasing an ability to anticipate plays and react swiftly. Exhibits superior man coverage skills, using a blend of physicality and technique to disrupt opposing receivers.”
Some of his weaknesses are:
“Light frame could hinder effectiveness against more physically imposing receivers and in shedding blockers. Zone coverage skills are underdeveloped. May be a liability if thrown into a complex zome scheme as a rookie.”
In the scouting report, there were way more strengths than weaknesses to his game. The Green Bay Packers haven’t had an elite defense in quite some time. The Green Bay Packers need to draft better on the defensive side of the football. If they were to select cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. from Missouri with the 28th overall selection, it would make a lot of Packers fans happy because of how talented he is.
