The Green Bay Packers made the shocking decision to move on from Aaron Jones this off-season. The move came after the Packers asked Jones to take a significant pay cut for the second year in a row. While both sides were interested in getting a deal done, the Packers wouldn’t budge on their offer.
Jones wound up taking more money with his former rival, the Minnesota Vikings. It is no secret that the general manager is the one in charge of signing and releasing players. However, the head coach often has a say in what he would like to happen. When LaFleur found out that the team was moving on from Jones, he had something to say.
Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur Had A Surprising Reaction To Aaron Jones’ Release
“It kind of caught me off guard, to be honest with you,” LaFleur said on March 26 at the annual NFL league meetings in Orlando, Florida.
“There were some other things in play obviously with Aaron Jones, and I didn’t quite know how everything was going to go. It just happened really fast on that Monday.”
Jones and the Packers tried to work things out in their own way. As reported by Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, the team asked Jones to take a 50% salary cut for the 2024 season due to his huge cap number of $17.57 million.
Jones took his first pay cut about a year ago – of about $5 million – to keep the Packers competitive and stay with them through 2023.
In this instance, Jones refused, which set the wheels of change in the running back room.
The Packers Will Move Forward With Josh Jacobs
In an effort to keep Jones around, they hoped he would take a pay cut to do so.
Rather, they brought in Jacobs, a 26-year-old tailback with three seasons of 1,000-plus rushing yards.
The addition of Jacobs is exciting for LaFleur. He said, “I’m not involved in those types of conversations. But we were super excited [to get Jacobs].”
It has been a successful offseason for the Packers, but they need to make some more additions to improve their chances of winning the Super Bowl. Green Bay has the ninth-best odds to win the title in 2024, at +2200, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
