The Green Bay Packers figured to struggle offensively this season at times. One off-season saw them become one of the youngest and most inexperienced offenses in the NFL. In fact, Jordan Love, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Luke Musgrave, Tucker Kraft, Aaron Jones, and A.J. Dillon have an AVERAGE age of just about 24-years-old.
That being said, the Packers certainly figure to add to that offense possibly this season (prior to the trade deadline), but especially next off-season. The unfortunate loss to the Minnesota Vikings may have moved them one step closer to adding a game changing wide receiver.
The Green Bay Packers’ Loss To The Minnesota Vikings Moved Them One Step Closer To Drafting Star Wide Receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.
Rex Shield of Cheesehead TV highlighted what the Packers’ most recent loss means in regard to Harrison Jr.:
I did not think I would be discussing the 2024 NFL Draft after Week 8 nor did I think I would be discussing the Packers’ chances at landing one of the top-tier players in that draft, but life is full of surprises.
If the Packers have a top-three pick, they would have their choice between USC quarterback Caleb Williams, North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye, and Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. Florida State edge rusher Jared Verse could also be in the mix, but Williams, Maye, and Harrison, Jr. are the top-three consensus players.
My choice? Harrison Jr., or Maserati Marvin as FOX college football play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson relentlessly called him two weeks ago when the Buckeyes faced off against Penn State. It was for good reason, though.
Harrison Jr. racked up 11 receptions for 162 yards and one touchdown that Saturday afternoon against a top-ten defense and potential first-round cornerback Kalen King. He followed up that performance with another beauty against Wisconsin, finishing with six receptions for 123 yards and two touchdowns.
His second touchdown catch was about as contested as it could have been, but Harrison Jr. showed his hands at just the last second and was able to get one foot in. The Philadelphia native has 48 catches for 889 yards and eight scores so far this season and has eclipsed at least 100 receiving yards in every single game this season except for two. (Harrison Jr. was sidelined for portions of those two games.)
He finished his sophomore campaign with 77 receptions, 1,263 yards, and 14 touchdowns.
In his 2024 NFL Draft Big Board that debuted at the start of the college football season, Dane Brugler of The Athletic tabbed Harrison Jr. as his No. 2 overall prospect, writing that he “is a prospect without any holes.
In full control of his 6-foot-3 frame at all times, he has an awesome ability to make just about every route on the tree look easy. He can win at the line of scrimmage, at the top of a route, at the catch point and everywhere in between.”
Would 2024 Finally Be The Year Of The Wide Receiver In The First Round?
Many fans thought that the first-round curse taking a wide receiver in the first round would end in 2023 when Jaxon Smith-Njigba was still available for the Packers. However, history repeated itself once again when the Packers took a defensive end.
Currenlty, the Packers own the sixth overall pick after their loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The Packers will play the New York Giants in Week 14, who have a 2-6 record and currently hold the fourth overall pick.In Week 16, the Packers will play the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers are 1-6 and currently have to send the Chicago Bears the No. 2 pick in 2024.
Point being, there is a lot more to be decided this year before the final draft results take place. If the Packers do wind up with a top draft pick, Marvin Harrison Jr. seems way too good to pass up (even though we’ve said that before regarding wide receiver prospects).
