There are multiple positions of concern for the Packers going into the 2023 off-season. Safety will be near (or at) the top of that list. The uncertainty of the position is at an all-time high. Adrian Amos is an unrestricted free agent and it is completely unclear if the Packers are interested in bringing him back. Darnell Savage will be back on his fifth-year option, however, his play has been extremely inconsistent as of late. Rudy Ford stepped in at safety when Darnell Savage was benched and put up impressive numbers. Ford is also an unrestricted free agent this off-season, however, is certainly one the Packers should consider bringing back. With all of this being said, shopping around in the free agency market for a safety wouldn’t be a bad idea. There is one that has been linked to the Packers that could be a big boost for the defense.
Free Agent Safety Jabril Peppers Linked To The Packers
According to Kenneth Teape of NFL Analysis Network:
This offseason, the team needs to focus on addressing some of their holes on that side of the ball. Shoring things up against the run should be the No. 1 goal as Green Bay was steamrolled by opponents regularly.
Opponents gained 2,372 yards on the ground against the Packers this season, which ranked them 26th in the league. It will take some personnel changes to turn that around and one player who could fit the bill is safety Jabrill Peppers.
Peppers is an excellent athlete that has had some bad luck in his NFL career when it comes to injuries. He showed flashes earlier in his career with the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants of being a dynamic playmaker but tore his ACL in 2021 and came back as a part-time player for the New England Patriots in 2022.
Peppers is a capable pass defender, but his best strength is playing in the box and sticking his nose into the run game. That is something Green Bay’s defense could certainly use more of, as Peppers’ strengths are weaknesses that they need to upgrade.
Jabril Peppers would be someone the Packers could bring in on an affordable deal who could help with multiple aspects on the defense. With only one safety (Darnell Savage) currently under contract in 2023, at least considering Peppers would be a smart move for Green Bay.
