The Green Bay Packers are certainly doing their homework ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft. The completely revamped defensive coaching staff has opened a door to a new scheme that could entice the Packers to put more of a focus different positions.
That was evident when the Packers signed star free agent Safety Xavier McKinney. However, the Packers may not be done with their secondary.
Green Bay Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst Witnessed Prospect Silence Critics
Bill Huber of Packers Central highlighted exactly what Brian Gutekunst witnessed at Alabama’s Pro Day:
Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst didn’t go to the Alabama pro day just to see Kool-Aid McKinstry. After all, the Crimson Tide might have four first-round picks in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Nonetheless, McKinstry’s performance included the most noteworthy 4.47 seconds of the day.
The standout cornerback didn’t test at the Scouting Combine after his physical revealed a Jones fracture in his left foot. On Wednesday, he ran his 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds, helping answer a key question about his speed. On Friday, he’ll have surgery to deal with his foot.
“It was very important for me to come out here and compete today, just to give my all and show what I got. That’s what this is for,” McKinstry said. “I know it was tough for me, the news (of my foot); I found out at the Combine. I was still able to show what I got and I feel good about it.”
McKinstry said he should be ready for the start of rookie camp.
The first round of the NFL Draft will be held on Thursday, April 25 – five weeks and one day from now.
Will The Packers Spend A Premium Draft Pick On The Secondary?
In 2019 the Packers doubled dipped at the edge rusher position in free agency by signing Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith. They could very well do the same thing in the secondary in 2024. Xavier McKinney was a massive signing for the Safety position, however, new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley places a lot of significance in the secondary.
It is almost guaranteed the Packers will spend draft capital on the secondary. Whether that means a top cornerback or safety remains up in the air.
However, there remains multiple talented veterans in free agency who could come in and make a difference. Justin Simmons and Micah Hyde are near the top of that list.
It will be interesting to see how the Packers continue to address the back end of their defense.
