The Green Bay Packers have had a wild start to the 2024 off-season. Their offense will certainly look different with the addition of Josh Jacobs and loss of Aaron Jones. Their defense got an absolute stud at their most needy defensive position in Xavier McKinney.
Today however, it was reported that the Packers would be keeping a key piece not only for their defense, but their special teams.
The Green Bay Packers Retain Key Defensive/Special Teams Piece
In spite of the shrinking salary cap space, the Packers aren’t done throwing money around. Green Bay has re-signed kick returner Keisean Nixon to a surprising three-year, $18 million contract, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reports. With incentives, the deal could be worth $19.2 million.

Since joining Green Bay in 2022, Nixon has led the NFL in kick returns (65) and return yards (1,791). Additionally, Nixon averaged a league-best 26.1 yards per return in 2023, leading him to be named to the All-Pro first team for the second consecutive year.
Will More Be Asked Of Keisean Nixon?
Because the Packers are unlikely to pay $6 million per year for a returner, Nixon is likely to see more defensive time in 2024 and beyond.
Nixon was targeted 78 times as a cornerback last season, according to Pro Football Focus. A total of 63 receptions (80.1%) were allowed for 626 yards, two touchdowns, and a passer rating of 103.3, with only two interceptions and four passes defended. Through five seasons, his average PFF cover grade is 53.2.
Jeff Hafley and this revamped defensive coaching staff will likely ask much more of Nixon in the coming years. The Packers’ secondary will look much different under the new regimen. One that Nixon may very well be successful in.
