The Green Bay Packers feel as though they’ve identified their next franchise quarterback. For the third time in a row the Packers may have a long-term answer at the most important position in football.
A 96.1 passer rating, 64.2% completion percentage, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions were Love’s first-year stats as a full-time starter in 2023.
Despite a slump at the start of the year, Love finished the season as one of the best quarterbacks in the league. During the final eight games of the regular season, Love completed 70.3% of his passes for 2,150 yards. During that span he threw 18 touchdowns and just one interception. Also during that period, he had a quarterback rating of 112.7, which was second in the league.
He also played an excellent game against the Cowboys during the playoffs. During the game, 16-of-21 passes were completed for 272 yards and three touchdowns. He had a perfect quarterback rating before he failed to complete his final pass.
Love certainly did enough to earn himself a new contract, however, could it be different than what we’ve been expecting?
Could The Green Bay Packers Change Up Their Extension For QB Jordan Love?

According to The NFL Scouting Report at Bleacher Report:
The Green Bay Packers had the NFL’s youngest roster in 2023, and they’re not carrying an excess of expensive contracts. They have plenty of cap space with which to navigate the coming season, and they are projected to have $62.4 million in 2025 cap space.
However, the matter of extending quarterback Jordan Love looms large. He looked like the long-term answer at the end of last season, and, barring a reversal of fortune, he’s going to see a hefty payday now or next offseason.
“At a minimum, Love should be in the $48.5 million-to-$49 million-per-year neighborhood,” former NFL agent Joel Corry wrote for CBS Sports.
Jared Goff’s $53 million-per-year extension may have already pushed Love’s price point past Corry’s estimation. The number will only go up if quarterbacks like Dak Prescott and Tua Tagovailoa sign new deals before Green Bay and Love get to the bargaining table.
While the Packers could transition to a quarterback like Prescott, Justin Fields or Trey Lance in 2025 free agency, using the franchise tag on Love is probably their best alternative to extending him.
Would The Packers Ever Franchise Tag Love?

On May 3rd, Jordan Love became eligible to sign an extension with the Packers. It’s fair to question how his contract will be structured considering how he finished 2023 as a top-10 quarterback in the league.
As a passer, Love ranked among the top ten in terms of passing yards, touchdowns, PFF passing grade, and big throws. Additionally, Love led the youngest NFL team to the playoffs since the 1970s.
Last year, he had 18 turnover-worthy plays (regular season and playoffs combined). Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Patrick Mahomes all had more TWPs in this timeframe than him. In the same span, Love had 37 big-time throws, which tied for third best.
When you get a guy like that under center, franchise tagging him feels like bad business. The team won’t want to give Love any reason to search for a new contract elsewhere. Tying him up now long-term is more beneficial for both sides.
